Linen is made from flax bast fibre and valued for texture, breathability and material variation. Environmental claims, however, depend on origin, processing, dyeing, finishing and product life.
Linen is a textile made from flax, a bast fibre taken from the stem of the plant. Its characteristic slubs and tonal variation arise from fibre, yarn and weaving choices; they should not automatically be treated as defects or as proof of superior quality.
In interiors, linen is used for curtains, upholstery, bedding and table textiles. Weight, weave, abrasion performance, colourfastness and finishing determine whether a fabric is appropriate for a particular application. A sheer curtain and a contract-grade upholstery cloth may share the same fibre name but have very different performance requirements.
Broad sustainability claims require care. Flax is plant-based, but the impact of a finished linen product also includes cultivation, retting, spinning, weaving, bleaching, dyeing, finishing, transport, use and end-of-life conditions. “Biodegradable” should not be treated as a guarantee that an upholstered product will harmlessly return to nature, because blends, coatings, threads, foams and adhesives may change the result.
Traceability is therefore more useful than romantic language. The Alliance for European Flax-Linen and Hemp operates certifications intended to identify origin and supply-chain compliance. The Council of Fashion Designers of America’s materials resource also distinguishes flax as the plant fibre and linen as the textile made from it.
Linen has a long history and remains relevant because it can offer texture, light filtration and a direct visual connection to natural fibre. A responsible specification should identify fibre composition, origin, finish, performance and care rather than rely on unsupported designer quotations or invented manufacturers.
